Massage Healthy Living

Massage has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, if you need or want a massage, you can choose from among 80 massage therapy styles with a wide variety of pressures, movements, and techniques. These all involve pressing, rubbing, or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers. Sometimes, even forearms, elbows, or feet are used.

According to a 2007 American Massage Therapy Association survey, almost a quarter of all adult Americans had at least one massage in the previous year. And, they have a wide range of reasons for doing so. More and more people — especially baby boomers — recognize the health benefits of massage. They choose from among many massage styles to get relief from symptoms or to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness.

Here is information you can use to help you decide what types of massage will work best for you.

 Which Massage Styles Are Best?

You may have noticed that different massage styles are popular at different times. And you may have wondered whether each was just part of a passing fad or the latest, greatest massage technique? Even more important is how can you tell whether the latest style will actually help you? Styles used in massage therapy range from long, smooth strokes to short, percussive strokes. Some massage therapists use oils and lotions; others do not.

Before you can decide which massage style is best for you, you need to ask yourself a question. Do you simply want a massage for relaxation and stress control? Or do you need symptom relief or help with a certain health condition? Before booking a massage, let the therapist know what you’re looking for and ask which style the therapist uses. Many use more than one style, or the therapist may customize your massage, depending on your age, condition, or any special needs or goals you have.

What follows is a list of some of the more popular massage therapy styles. The first four are especially popular.

 Swedish Massage

The most common type of massage is Swedish massage therapy. It involves soft, long, kneading strokes, as well as light, rhythmic, tapping strokes, on topmost layers of muscles. This is also combined with movement of the joints. By relieving muscle tension, Swedish therapy can be both relaxing and energizing, and it may even help after an injury.

 Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff “trouble spots” in your body. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under your skin. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage can be quite therapeutic — relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as back sprain.

 Hot Stone Massage

For this kind of massage, the therapist places warmed stones on certain areas of the body, such as acupressure points. The stones may be used as massage tools or be temporarily left in place. Used along with other massage techniques, hot stones can be quite soothing and relaxing as they transmit heat deep into the body.

 Pregnancy Massage

During pregnancy, your body goes through major changes. Pregnancy massage can help with these changes by reducing stress, decreasing arm and leg swelling, and relieving muscle and joint pain. Massage may be particularly helpful during a time when medication and other medical options may be more limited. Using specially designed massage pillows, the massage therapist will help get you into a comfortable position for this type of massage.

What Are the Health Benefits of Massage?

Many types of massage offer benefits beyond simple relaxation. Here are just a few of the health problems that may benefit from massage. Ask your doctor before using massage for any health condition, though.

  • Headache. Another type of pain- also responds to massage therapy, as shown by more than one study. Massage therapy can reduce the number of migraines a person has and also improve sleep Osteoarthritis . In the first clinical trial looking at the effectiveness of Swedish massage for knee osteoarthritis, participants who received a one-hour massage either one or two times a week had improvements in pain, stiffness, and function. The control group had no such change.
  • Cancer. Used as a complement to traditional, Western medicine, massage can promote relaxation and reduce Cancer Symptoms or side effects of treatment. It may help reduce pain, swelling, fatigue, nausea or depression, for example, or improve the function of your immune system.
  • Anxiety. A review of more than 12 studies shows that massage helps relieve Depression and Anxiety. It lowered levels of cortisol by up to 50%. And massage increased levels of neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.

The Benefits of Foot Detox

What are the benefits of detox foot baths?

Purging of heavy metals
A more balanced pH level
Reducing inflammation
Purging of yeast
Detoxifying the liver
Internal cleansing with full-body purge
Liver, kidney, and aparasite cleansing
Enhancing the immune system
Who can benefit from ionic detox foot baths?

This is a safe therapy for anyone over the age of 10 years, except for those who wear a pacemaker or have seizures. This is suggested therapy for people who have accumulated many stored toxins and are not able to get rid of them efficiently, due to overworked liver, spleen, and kidney functions. This is especially recommended therapy for those who take a lot of medications. The ionic detox foot bath does not eliminate beneficial medications from the body.

What is an ionic detox foot bath?

An ionic detox foot bath is a natural method of assisting the body in eliminating harmful toxins, heavy metals, and other harmful foreign matter.

What can I expect after a detox foot bath session?

Most people will feel relaxed, balanced, and focused. There is usually no pain. People who suffer from excessive toxicity may experience some discomfort as their bodies release toxins from the tissues for elimination. After a detox foot bath, clients are encouraged to drink plenty of water to assist with making elimination easier and more confortable. Some people may experience fatigue or headache after a session.

What is a detox foot bath session like?

During a session the client sits in a comfortable chair. Most individuals find the experience VERY relaxing and it is not unusual for the client to fall asleep. The session takes about 30–40 minutes. Some people may experience a slight tickling or tingling sensation from the ionic detox foot bath.

How does an ionic detox foot bath work?

Electrical current passes through a set of plates in a module that is immersed in the water inside the foot bath tub. The foot bath water contains a special sea salt, so it has the mineral concentration of water from the ocean. While the client’s feet are in the water, positive and negative ions are emitted by the foot bath system. This re-energizes the body and the red blood cells. It eliminates toxins that are stored in fat, kidneys, liver, bowels, and skin. The foot bath also triggers the body’s lymphatic system, which helps with continuing detoxification for up to 24 to 48 hours after a session.

How do ionic detox foot baths balance molecules?

The major health objective is to have healthy cell molecules. There must be a balance of positive and negative ions in cells and molecules. If the atoms or molecules lose electrons, the atoms and molecules become positively-charged ions. If they gain electrons, they become negatively-charged ions. The ionic technique of cleansing through the feet provides a full-body purge of all vital organs. This can alleviate menopause symptoms, menstrual cramps, sexual health problems, skin problems, acne,
sleep problems, restlessness, stress, toothaches, wrinkles, aches and pains, and yeast infections. The internal cleansing can also contribute to faster disease healing and injury recovery.

Due to a busy and stressful lifestyle, many people do not eat a balanced diet. They may end up storing excessive quantities of toxins and waste products in their bodies. During a detoxifying foot bath session, ions from the module enter the body and begin to neutralize tissue acid wastes. This process is called reverse osmosis.

How many detox foot baths will I need?

It is suggested that you begin with a total of 6 sessions over a 3–5 week period to maximize detoxification. After these initial sessions, you can switch to monthly sessions. The Healing Place offers a detox foot bath series package.

How quickly can I expect results for my condition?

This will depend on your personal condition, lifestyle, and your willingness to take responsibility for your health. The frequency of the detox foot bath sessions also plays a role in how quickly results are achieved.

12 Good Hair Habits (that will save you time and money at the Salon!)

If you really want better (or perfect?) hair, turn away from all those pricey fads you read about in magazines and instead, pick up some daily habits that will actually make a difference between salon visits.   We asked Celebrity Stylist and Master Colorist Dawn Shannon (owner of Intuition Salon and Spa in Clearwater and St. Pete) to spill her secrets on things women with fantastic hair do daily,  and here’s her list!

1. Keep your hair clean!

We’re sure you’ve heard a lot about the “No-Poo movement” (basically not shampooing your hair to preserve your natural oils), but you should actually “listen” to your hair.  As long as you are using high quality products (not the drug or grocery store brands!) you can benefit from more frequent washing.  It reduces split ends, provides great moisture, and gives hair an overall clean and shiny look.

Not sure how often to lather up?  Here’s the key: Wash daily if you live in a city with pollution or humidity, or work out daily. Wash every few days if you live in a rural environment away from pollutants, or an especially dry climate. And if your hair is normal or combination, with dry ends and oily roots, you should split the difference and wash every other day.

(And get a water filter on your shower head to reduce chlorine and mineral deposits!)

2. Know the right amount of product to use — and where to use it.

If you cover your entire head when you shampoo or conditioner, you’re doing it wrong! Concentrate the shampoo on the first few inches of hair at the scalp, where you get the most oil and product buildup — your ends don’t need cleansing as much. As for conditioner, work it in from the mid-shaft to the ends where the hair is driest and prone to split ends.

The Salon Professionals at Intuition Salon and Spa will be more than happy to show you the correct products and techniques for keeping your hair fabulous.

3. Don’t skimp on the moisturizer!

The skin that makes up your scalp needs moisture just like the skin on your face does, especially if it’s going to provide a healthy foundation for hair to grow. A general rule of thumb is to condition every time you shampoo. The skilled professionals at Intuition can analyze your hair and recommend the best shampoo / conditioner combination for your hair type and lifestyle.

But the moisturizing doesn’t end once you leave the shower. Even if you’re not heat-styling your hair (see #10) you should comb through a protective product (leave in conditioner) as this can reduce frizz, dryness, and split ends, and even protect your color!

4. Keep it cool in the shower!

When you’re washing your hair, you don’t want the water too hot. Excess heat can blast the volume out of your hair, leaving you with limp locks. Instead, opt for warm water — this temperature allows you to work up a nice lather while still staying hot enough to rinse suds clean. And when it comes to the final post-conditioner rinse, the colder the better. Chilly water locks in those coveted nutrients into each strand, adding a beautiful, healthy luster.

5. Stay loyal!

It’s a common misconception that switching up your hair care brands keeps your hair healthier because it never gets time to adapt, but many experts disagree. I suggest finding what works for you and sticking with it. Remember: Your hair doesn’t know the difference. And while it’s perfectly fine to change things up when originally searching for that perfect combination that leaves you with killer strands — once you find it, don’t let it go! Also – while store brands may appear “cheaper” at the cash register, they will cost you more in the long run as they don’t do as good a job as our Intuition Salon Brands (so you end up spending more apt the Salon to repair damage) and with Salon Brands you actually use LESS product for better results so each bottle lasts far longer!

6. Eat the right foods!

For all the attention we pay to the hair follicle once it leaves the scalp, half the battle for beautiful hair is already lost (or won) by what you’re putting into your body every day. What you eat plays a huge role in gloss, growth, and volume!

A diet rich in iron, zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids, and protein will help stimulate your hair follicles for growth. Alternating between lean red meat, chicken, and fish during the week for optimum hair health.

7. Take your vitamins!

Even if your diet is impeccable, it’s possible you’re missing out on some crucial hair-boosting vitamins. Not sure if you need them?  The answer is in how healthy (or not-so-healthy) your skin and nails look. For example, if your fingernails are ridging and/or if you have dry, flaky skin, chances are your hair is crying out for help, too. But that’s easy to reverse: Once you start taking the right combo of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs, you can get fuller, shinier, and stronger hair in just a few months. Bonus: Your nails and skin will also benefit.

8. Limit your time in the sun!

You see the damage that a day without sun protection does to your skin, but even though your hair suffers just as much, it can be harder to tell. To prevent sun damage, apply a leave-in conditioner at least every other day. Careful application from mid-shaft to the ends of hair can combat damage from the summer big three — UV rays, wind, and saltwater.

And if you’re headed to the beach where the heat will be coming at you from all directions, spritz a generous application of heat protectant with SPF onto damp hair before going out, followed by a reapplication after swims — same as you would do for your skin.

9. Steer clear of snarls.

Before you go ripping a comb through your strands, think about what you’re doing — and be gentle. Use a wide-toothed comb for particularly tangled locks, and always brush your hair from bottom to top to avoid creating more knots and snarls.

10. Avoid over-heating with your styling tools!

Let’s be honest, you have to use styling tools sometimes, so when you do be sure not to over heat your hair!  The professionals at Intuition are happy to show you the best and safest styling tools available as well as professional techniques for getting the most out your tools with the least amount of possible damage.

11. Sleep on silk!

Silk’s smooth texture won’t rough up your hair cuticle when you sleep the way cotton does, leaving you with smoother hair in return. Fewer frizzy strands in the morning? Now that’s the dream (no pun intended).

12. Get regular trims — even when growing out your hair.

You might be tempted to skip seasonal trims when growing out your hair, but to add healthy length, you actually need to do just the opposite. A haircut every six to eight weeks is necessary to prevent split ends from forming as the hair cuticle splits.

When the split goes up the hair shaft, it becomes so thin that it breaks — that’s when people get breakage. Once your hair splits, there’s no way to repair it, so keep it trimmed to prevent harmful breakage before it starts.
